No 1 Hook and Ladder Company from the Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department formed in 1866, the helmet plate was designed to fit a British Merryweather pattern brass fire helmet was in use until the early 1900’s.

The Hook and Ladder Company was the first Company formed in the Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department in 1866 by Captain J. P. Roberts who was elected first Chief Engineer and Mr. C. J. Ashley foreman of the Mih-ho-loong (Extinguishing fire dragons) No 1 Hook and Ladder Company. This Company had a working force numbering twelve foreigners and forty-five coolies in 1872.Its name was created from a Fire Department based in New York during the same period. The Shanghai Municipal Council was in charge of the Police, the Fire Brigade and even a military force including the Shanghai Volunteer Corps. Which would make it quite unusual and unique having a British Fire Brigade and American Fire Department connection.

Following the treaty of Nanjing, they were granted a concession on mainland China. Britain and other European Countries were also granted trading rights and territory and in 1863 Britain and the US joined together to form the Shanghai Municipal Council. France never did join – but others did and a total of eleven countries were represented.

The American, English and French Settlements were known respectively as Fire Districts Nos. 1, 2, and 3, with had several numbered companies. The Hook and Ladder Company was the first Company formed, the other companies following in numerical order. After research the following names came to light. The MIH-HO-LOONGS Hook and Ladder Company No1, Hongkew Co No. 2, Deluge Co No 4, Torrent Co No 6, Victoria Co No 7. Each of the Companies were made up of approximately 20 Europeans.

We have for sale an extremely rare original 1866 Shanghai Fire Brigade Mih Ho Loong Fire Officers helmet plate

No 1 Hook and Ladder Company from the Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department formed in 1866, the helmet plate was designed to fit a British Merryweather pattern white metal fire helmet and was in use until the early 1900’s.

This Company had a working force numbering twelve foreigners and forty-five coolies in 1872. T. G. Smith, C. Walsh and C. M. Senna were listed in records as Officers and this badge will have belonged to one of the above making it an extremely rare item.

Its name originates from a Fire Department based in New York during the same period. The Shanghai Municipal Council was in charge of the Police, the Fire Brigade and even a military force including the Shanghai Volunteer Corps. Which would make it quite unusual and unique having a British Fire Brigade and American Fire Department connection.

This beautiful Helmet plate has no silver Hallmark, it has been tested and the results indicate it is silver, the colour and feel of the badges smooth surfaces and malleable form backs up the test results. The front has the name of the company Mih Ho Loong around the hook and ladder centre above the number 1, the badge is made of 2 pieces which is riveted together, the back plate is the standard design of Merryweather helmet plate and there are 2 screws to mount the badge to the helmet.
