1866 Shanghai Fire Brigade Mih Ho Loong Fireman’s helmet plate

We have for sale an extremely rare Original 1866 Shanghai Fire Brigade Mih Ho Loong Fireman’s helmet plate

No 1 Hook and Ladder Company from the Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department formed in 1866, the helmet plate was designed to fit a British Merryweather pattern brass fire helmet was in use until the early 1900’s.

The Hook and Ladder Company was the first Company formed in the Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department in 1866 by Captain J. P. Roberts who was elected first Chief Engineer and Mr. C. J. Ashley foreman of the Mih-ho-loong (Extinguishing fire dragons) No 1 Hook and Ladder Company. This Company had a working force numbering twelve foreigners and forty-five coolies in 1872.Its name was created from a Fire Department based in New York during the same period. The Shanghai Municipal Council was in charge of the Police, the Fire Brigade and even a military force including the Shanghai Volunteer Corps. Which would make it quite unusual and unique having a British Fire Brigade and American Fire Department connection.

Following the treaty of Nanjing, they were granted a concession on mainland China. Britain and other European Countries were also granted trading rights and territory and in 1863 Britain and the US joined together to form the Shanghai Municipal Council. France never did join – but others did and a total of eleven countries were represented.

The American, English and French Settlements were known respectively as Fire Districts Nos. 1, 2, and 3, with had several numbered companies. The Hook and Ladder Company was the first Company formed, the other companies following in numerical order. After research the following names came to light. The MIH-HO-LOONGS Hook and Ladder Company No1, Hongkew Co No. 2, Deluge Co No 4, Torrent Co No 6, Victoria Co No 7. Each of the Companies were made up of approximately 20 Europeans.

This brass Helmet plate the front has the name of the company Mih Ho Loong around the hook and ladder centre above the number 1, the badge is made of 2 pieces which is riveted together, the back plate is the standard design of Merryweather helmet plate and there are 2 screws to mount the badge to the helmet.

It is in excellent condition, it has not been over polished or worn thin, it has no holes or other damage worth mentioning.

For further information please ask, images of Deluge and Torrent Companies wearing their brass helmets with named helmet plates can be found on the internet.

1866 Shanghai Fire Brigade Mih Ho Loong Fire Officers helmet plate

We have for sale an extremely rare original 1866 Shanghai Fire Brigade Mih Ho Loong Fire Officers helmet plate

No 1 Hook and Ladder Company from the Shanghai Volunteer Fire Department formed in 1866, the helmet plate was designed to fit a British Merryweather pattern white metal fire helmet and was in use until the early 1900’s.

This Company had a working force numbering twelve foreigners and forty-five coolies in 1872. T. G. Smith, C. Walsh and C. M. Senna were listed in records as Officers and this badge will have belonged to one of the above making it an extremely rare item.

Its name originates from a Fire Department based in New York during the same period.

The MIH-HO-LOONGS Hook and Ladder Company No1, Hongkew Co No. 2, Deluge Co No 4, Torrent Co No 6, Victoria Co No 7. Each of the Companies were made up of approximately 20 Europeans.

This beautiful Helmet plate has no silver Hallmark, it has been tested and the results indicate it is silver, the colour and feel of the badges smooth surfaces and malleable form backs up the test results. The front has the name of the company Mih Ho Loong around the hook and ladder centre above the number 1, the badge is made of 2 pieces which is riveted together, the back plate is the standard design of Merryweather helmet plate and there are 2 screws to mount the badge to the helmet.

WODGON PISTOLS

percussion with engraved dolphin hammers they measure approx 380 mm overall with 235 mm barrels. Every thing is as it should be, action working well with good strong springs, no cracks in woodwork and all the metal work tight.

If i had to say something negative about this set it would only be that there is a few dents on the powder flask and some very minor bruising on the woodwork  and maybe the green felt in the interior of the case has been replaced.

Wogdon & Barton (founded by Robert Wogdon) was an 18th-century firm of gunsmiths based in London, England. Robert Wogdon produced flintlock firearms from the 1760s, and was particularly well known for his high quality duelling pistols. The name Wogdon became synonymous with dueling, to the extent that duels in England were sometimes referred to as “a Wogdon affair”. Wogdon formed a partnership in 1794 with John Barton, after which their pistols were signed Wogdon and Barton. Wogdon retired in 1803 and died in 1813.

Wogdon made the pistols used in the infamous Burr-hamilton duel, which were later claimed to have concealed “hair triggers” (also known as set trigger). These gave the person using them an advantage over their opponent by reducing the amount of finger pressure required to fire the pistol, which greatly increased accuracy of the shot. However for at least twenty years before the Burr-Hamilton duel, English duelling pistols by all the top makers had been customarily fitted with set triggers. Wogdon’s duelling pistols were fitted with set triggers as a standard feature, so they cannot be regarded as “secret” devices that other duellists of the era would be completely unaware of.

Robert Wogdon (January 1734 – 28 March 1813) died aged 79 years and was buried with his wife Jane (died 15 February 1805, aged 69) in the chancel of St Bartholomew’s Church, located on the outskirts of Buntingford, Herfordshire

Annee XI light cavalry Sabre

We have for sale a

Annee XI light cavalry sabre by Kirschbaum and Schimmelbusch (Solingen)

This Napoleonic sabre was introduced for the French light cavalry and mounted artillery in 1803, and was known as a “Sabre Cavalerie Legere Modele AN XI” – Year 11 of the Revolutionary calendar (introduced on 22nd September 1792). This was a very successful model under a number of French regimes.  Most were made at Klingenthal.  This is a much rarer example by Kirschbaum, Schimmelbusch & Co. in Solingen – made during the period of French control of the Rhineland Confederation, 1807-1814.  Kirschbaum and Schimmelbusch are believed to have collaborated formally during the years 1807-1813.  So, this example could have been at Waterloo.

This is a formidable sword and substantial in the hand – blade and hilt are clearly robust – more substantial than, for example, the British P1796 light cavalry sword.   The flat, back edge has the inscription “Manufacture de Solingen K.S.& C.”.  This sword has its original heavy duty steel scabbard with dual ring mounts (normally unpainted – this one has received a single coat of black paint at some point, but will come off easily).

Length: 39 1/2″
Blade: a shade under 35″
Blade width: 1 3/16″
Guard: three branch in brass, with hooked quillon
Grip: wooden slabs (beech), covered in leather (this model did not have a wire wrap) and with one brass lozenge on each side of the grip (referred to by the French as half olives); clear evidence of some woodworm, but no structural damage and the grip remains strongly intact.
Scabbard: plain steel and in almost perfect order – one light ding; two hanging rings.

Weight (sword): just over 2 lb
Weight (scabbard): 1 lb 10 oz

1821 PATTERN LIGHT CAVALRY SWORD

We have for sale a 1821 pattern light  cavalry sword in sleeper condition.

A rare trooper’s example in very good, unrestored condition.  Extra leather cover has, at some time in the distant past, been shrink-wrapped over the existing hilt.  Interestingly, I have been unable to find any unit markings.

Blade length and width: 35.5in. x 1.25in.

Blade type:  slightly curved, flat back, single broad fuller to within 8in. of the spear point; double edged for the last 10in.

Guard:  plain steel, three-bar.  Single hooked quillon.

Grip:  wood, covered with leather.  Also, extra shrink-wrapped leather cover.

Scabbard:  steel, with two bands and loose rings; large shoe.

Back edge has maker’s stamp: OSBORN. Thomas Osborn of Birmingham (a major Government contractor).

Believed influenced by the French Light Cavalry sword, Model 1816.  Essentially, a compromise “cut and thrust” sword.  Production started in 1823, each sword costing eighteen shillings, excluding the scabbard.  Superseded by the dual-purpose Sword, Cavalry, Pattern 1853.

SOE GRAVITY KNIFE

We have a very rare George Ibberson & co SOE gravity knife in great condition.

If you would like some more information on this item please contact

History of the British Gravity Knife

After British forces had captured numbers of the Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger-Messer, the British government approached George Ibberson & Co. of Sheffield, England, a knife and cutlery manufacturer, and asked him to produce a British version of the German Luftwaffe gravity knife for the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and other clandestine warfare units.

Under the initial wartime contract, George Ibberson & Co. initially made 500 gravity knives for issue to the SOE and other special forces. Two other manufacturers, both of Sheffield, Yorkshire, produced between 1,200 and 1,500 knives during the war.

These Sheffield gravity knives had smooth wood or textured plastic scales, but were otherwise identical in features and operation to the Luftwaffe Fallschirmjäger-Messer, with a locking gravity-deployed blade, takedown feature, and a folding rigging spike or awl.

In the hands of British SOE agents, the Sheffield gravity knife was considered to be a secondary combat weapon.

In addition to the knife blade, SOE close combat instructors found that the folding rigging spike was useful for silent elimination of sentries by opening the carotid artery on the neck.

The gravity knife, which is a direct copy of the German gravity knife was made by the Company George Ibberson of Sheffield, England. When British forces first captured German Paratroopers equipment many items were copied by the British War Office.

Amongst collectors of British knives the gravity knife is basically the Holy Grail.

The story goes that after the war the gravity knives were gathered up, taken and dumped in the North Sea

The Italian 10.35mm Model 1870/87 infantry rifle employed a bolt action mechanism developed by Friedrich Vetterli, whose design was adopted by the Swiss Army in 1869. Initially the Italian rifle was issued as a single-loader but, from 1887, was adapted to accept a box magazine, designed by Giuseppe Vitali. Model 1870/87 rifles were still in service with second line Italian units when Italy entered the First World War. Subsequently, most were re-chambered for the modern smokeless 6.5mm service cartridge. Prior to the First World War, as the Italian Army began to be equipped with the Model 1891 rifle many Vetterli-Vitali rifles were sold to arms dealers. A consignment of these, was purchased by the Ulster Volunteer Force during 1913-14. The UVF was a Protestant organization, created to oppose plans for Irish Home Rule. It would appear that most of the Italian rifles were issued to UVF volunteers in the rural counties of Armagh, Fermanagh and Monaghan, with more modern Mannlicher rifles being employed elsewhere
